மார்ச் - ஏப்ரல், 1988 ‘கணையாழி’யில் வெளியான ‘நிகழ்வு’ என்னும் மிகச்சிறு கதையே ஓர் இதழில் வெளியான எனது முதல் சிறுகதை. அப்போது முதல் தொடர்ந்து சிறுகதைகள் எழுதி வந்திருக்கிறேன். 2015 ஜனவரியில் ‘காலச்சுவடு’ இதழில் வெளியான ‘மாலை நேரத் தேநீர்’ கடைசிக் கதை. அதற்குப் பின் இந்த இரண்டாண்டுகளில் ஒரு கதைகூட எழுதவில்லை. ஏற்கனவே நான்கு தொகுப்புகளாக வெளியானவை, நூல்களில் இடம்பெறாதவை அனைத்தும் சேர்ந்த ஒட்டுமொத்தத் தொகுப்பு இது. இவற்றைத் தொகுத்துப் பார்த்தபோது இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் கதைகள் எழுதியிருக்கலாமே என்னும் உணர்வு தோன்றியது. சவாலான வடிவமாகிய சிறுகதைக்குள் கவனம் செலுத்த வேண்டும் எனவும் நினைவோடியது. இனிமேல் எழுதப் போகும் கதைகளைப் பற்றிச் சிந்திக்க உத்வேகம் உருவாயிற்று. மேலும் இக்கதைகள் என் இலக்கிய ஆற்றலின் போக்கை உணர்த்தும் பெரும்சான்றாக விளங்கி வாசிப்போரின் அனுபவ வெளியை விரிவாக்கும் எனவும் நம்புகிறேன். பெருமாள்முருகன்Perumal Murugan’s first short story was published in Kanayazhi magazine on 1988 and the last in Kalachuvadu on 2015. They have been published as four collections during this period. This complete collection has all the stories including previously uncollected works. For a perumalmurugan reader some of these stories fit nicely between his novels and some are a surprise. The author says, he feels he should have concentrated more on the challenging form of short stories. The stories are yet another proof for the excellent storytelling capabilities of the author, and an enchanting read to any uninitiated reader, that expands their empathy.
